Maria Island

Maria Island

Distance: 42.3km

Difficulty: Moderate

The only traffic on the island national park is in the form of wombats and kangaroos. Dotted with historic ruins, sweeping bays, dramatic cliffs and vistas aplenty the island is accessible by plane and ferry. There are plenty of wide, unsealed tracks open to cyclists – though you need to pre-pack supplies as you won’t find any of Tasmania’s famous eateries here.

Stay at the old penitentiary building at Darlington or go full off-road and hit one of the many camping sites on the island (Encampment Cove is a two-hour pedal away and yes, it’s as majestic as it sounds).
